1981
The Honduran tradition is mainly one of political caricature in the daily press.
The historian and cartoonist Fredy Macías traces the first printed cartoons to Tito Monterroso in 1919 and 1921, followed by Miguel Ángel Montoya's attacks on the government in the late 1940s and a strong generation in the 1970s that included RAVIBER, Roberto Ruiz and Napoleón Ham. Comic books came late: the academy 9art was founded in 2015, and Germán Andino's comics report El hábito de la mordaza (2016) won an international journalism prize.

Chapter 01
First press cartoons
The earliest cartoons found in Honduran newspapers are by Tito Monterroso, from 1919 and 1921, and other early names include Salomón Ferrufino and Hermes Anduray. In the late 1940s Miguel Ángel Montoya criticised the government directly over taxes, schooling and jobs.

The generation of the 1970s
The 1969 war with El Salvador marked a group of cartoonists who became known in the 1970s: Ramón Villeda Bermúdez (RAVIBER), Roberto William (ROWI), Douglas Montes de Oca (DOUMONT), Roberto Ruiz, Napoleón Ham and Marlon Bey. Ruiz published the cartoon book Telón in 1981, and Ham drew only for La Tribuna from 1979.

Banegas, McDonald and the cartoonists' association
Rodolfo Deras, Ángel Darío Banegas and Allan McDonald entered the press in the 1980s; Banegas began a daily cartoon in El Heraldo in 1985 and published Y reír es de sabios in 1989. The Asociación de Caricaturistas de Honduras was formed in that decade and faded in the 1990s, and the 2009 coup split the cartoonists as it split society.
